Quick German - out and about (German lesson)

When you are traveling in Germany certain standard situations will arise which every German aspirant will have to cope with. This latest "Quick German" segment will help.


Excuse me! [for attracting attention, approaching a stranger]

Entschuldigung!

It's always polite to approach a stranger that way, irrespective of what you ask next.

As long as you are speaking to an adult, use the polite form of "you" (= Sie). For teenagers and children you can use "du".


  • How do I get to [the railway station / the shopping mall XYZ / Brandenburg Gate ...]?Wie komme ich zum .... [ Bahnhof / Einkaufszentrum XYZ / Brandenburger Tor ...]?

  • Do you know [the Hotel XYZ / the restaurant XYZ ...]? Kennen Sie [das Hotel XYZ / das Restaurant XYZ ...]?

  • I'm looking for ..... Do you know where that is? Ich suche ... Wissen Sie wo das ist?

  • Is there / Are there .... [money changers / a bank / an ATM / a washroom / a car rental / bike rental]? Gibt es hier Geldwechsler / eine Bank / einen Geldautomaten / eine Toilette / eine Autovermietung / einen Fahrradverleih]?

  • Can you tell me where is .... ?

  • Können Sie mir sagen wo .... ist?


Answers for directions are likely to contain the following phrases:

Gehen Sie gerade aus. - Go straight.


Bis ... - Until ...


Bis zur nächsten Kreuzung Until the next intersection.


Bis zur nächsten Ampel Until the next traffic light


Biegen Sie rechts / links ab. - Turn righ / left


Wenden Sie. - Make a u-turn.


Nächste Straße rechts / links Next street right / left


Auf der rechten / linken Seite On the right / left hand side.


Überqueren Sie ... Cross ...


How much is ....?

Was kostet ... ?


Can I pay by card?

Kann ich mit Karte bezahlen?

Yes please / of course. - No, sorry. Only cash.

Ja, gerne / natürlich - Nein, tut mir leid. Nur Bargeld / nur bar.

Eintrittskarten

Two adults, two children, please. - One adult, please

Zwei Erwachsene, zwei Kinder, bitte. - Ein Erwachsener, bitte.
